Sunstead: What Happens When Europe's Best Builders Meet the Midnight Sun
On June 24-26, something unusual happened in Levi, Finnish Lapland. Eighty-plus of Europe's most talented builders arrived at a hotel on top of a fell, well above the Arctic Circle, for two days of non-stop building under a sun that never set.
This was Sunstead Hack, the northernmost hackathon on the planet, and it wasn't open to just anyone. Thirteen of Europe's best founder communities, from Helsinki to London, Stockholm to Munich, Copenhagen to Vilnius, each hand-picked their strongest teams to represent them. No open applications. A fully curated room, with every expense covered from the moment participants landed in Helsinki.
Why we built it
Sunstead started as a side project and a simple decision: Kiuas, Junction, and Founders House Helsinki sat down early this year and chose to combine forces. It grew into something much bigger, a rare collaboration across Helsinki's ecosystem organizations, with Slush and many others pitching in.
The goal was never just another hackathon. Europe has the talent and the will to solve the biggest problems on earth, but the tech scene is scattered across cities and communities that rarely build together. We wanted to prove that world-class European gatherings don't have to happen in London or Stockholm. They can happen in Finland, even in the Finnish Arctic.
What happened on the fell
The quality of what teams shipped in such a short window was mind-blowing. Projects ranged from autonomous cybersecurity to a simulation game of European decision-making, built with tools and challenges from partners like Aiven, OpenOcean, Tangled, Anthropic, ElevenLabs, Lovable, Vercel, and AWS.
But the tech wasn't the most valuable output. The people were. Participants told us the connections they made changed their lives, and that some of the best conversations happened in the sauna between coding sessions. That's exactly what we were after: Europe's top talent making personal connections that outlast any demo.
The story resonated beyond the fell too. Talouselämä came to Lapland to cover it, and Sunstead was featured on Finnish national radio by YLE.
What's next
Sunstead showed a glimpse of what's possible when the best of the best get to challenge and inspire each other. We're continuing the work in Finland with Kiuas, Junction, Founders House Helsinki, Slush and more, and we aim to make this kind of ecosystem collaboration the norm, not the exception.
